Tesla at Investor Day talks about cost cutting: Starting next generation of cars, it’s ditching the online production process because it’s inefficient

Certainly, the ongoing policy of price reduction is the topic of the moment that will not please current Tesla owners. TESLA: FROM MAIN CAR PRODUCTION TO MODULE PRODUCTION

Lars presented the new Tesla manufacturing process explaining that some of the innovations already implemented with Tesla Model Y (structural battery) e Tesla Cybertruck (die casting) will be incorporated into the new process which will help reduce Tesla’s production costs by up to 50%.. Cars will no longer be built on a long assembly line where parts are added incrementally, sometimes inefficiently taken apart and reassembled (especially before and after painting). Tesla cars will be built in modules almost complete but separated (left, right, floor, front, rear and panels), then assembled only in the last stage of the process.

This process will keep the different parts which rotate simultaneously on the production line as little time as possible, thus also reducing the number of robots and machines for handling parts that weigh more today. Lars explained that the individual modules will be built separately, painting only the parts which are then immediately assembled. All the components will only be assembled once where they need to go. This will also avoid editing operations that today require:

  • haptic robots controlled by workers to insert heavy parts into the cabin, such as seats, dashboard, etc. ;
  • workers to assume positions that are uncomfortable, tiring or supported by tutors;
  • repeatedly turn the entire vehicle several times until the process is complete.
