Fewer rare earths and shared components will make electric and e-Power motors more competitive: here’s what will change with Nissan X-in-1

10 March 2023 – 09:30

Simplification and integration are two principles that most car manufacturers are increasingly adopting in the development of electrified car engines. We saw it with the first hybrid cars with an electric motor integrated into the gearbox (ZF solution) and we will see it with the 3 in 1 electrical modules, a configuration that will be common to electric cars. The latest announcement from nissan opens a door to reduction of production costs with X-in-1the new development approach to make electric motors and e-Power more competitive.

PRODUCTION COST OF ELECTRIC MOTORS -30% WITH NISSAN X-IN-1

nissan promised that with the approach X-in-1, by 2026 development and production costs will be reduced by 30% compared to 2019. The cost of Nissan e-POWER models will also be equal to the cost of models equipped with a traditional internal combustion engine. Also, the adoption of solid state batteries from 2028 will lead to 50% lower costs and third-party cooldowns. It must also be said that the competitiveness of manufacturers will also depend a great deal on agreements with their suppliers: see the example of CATL in China, which wants to become the sole supplier at derisory prices.

NISSAN X-IN-1: WHAT IS IT AND WHAT ADVANTAGES

nissan made a prototype of 100% electric propulsion unit called 3 in 1because it consists of 3 components (motor, inverter and reducer), and a prototype of e-POWER called 5-in-1 composed of 5 components: (motor, inverter, reducer, generator and multiplier). According to the manufacturer, the main benefits of the X-in-1 approachwhich are:

  • greater production efficiency resulting from sharing and of modularity of individual elements construction and control technology;
  • possibility of using the same production line for 100% electric motors and e-POWER;
  • lighter engines and less bulky, which results in less consumption, less noise and less vibration;
  • newly developed engines with a reduction in the use of rare earths at 1% by weight.

NISSAN X-IN-1 FOR 27 NEW MODELS BY 2030

This new project is part of the Nissan Ambition 2030 long-term vision, which includes the introduction of 27 new electrified modelsincluding 19 new 100% electric vehicles, by 2030. “Thanks to the experience and know-how acquired over more than a decade in the development and production of electrification technologies, we will continue to offer our customers innovative and quality products, promoting the spread of mobility electric and e-POWER models”he stated Toshihiro Hiraisenior vice president, responsible for the technical development of electric powertrains and electric vehicles.
