Hyundai’s ACR robot helps people with reduced mobility when charging – here’s how it works and where you can already see it

22 March 2023 – 09:26

Hyundai Motor Group presented a automatic charging robot (ACR) for electric vehicles developed to simplify the charging of electric cars in low light conditions, but above all to assist people with disabilities at the charging station. With HPC (High Performance Charger) charging systems, the cables are bigger and heavier, which is why Hyundai has thought of a robot that can also assist people with reduced mobility. This solution according to the Korean group has a huge possibility of automating reloading of a large number of parked vehicles, without the intervention of the driver, since the robot is able to communicate with the car, it is not yet known if these are only those of the Hyundai – Kia brands.

HOW THE HYUNDAI ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING ROBOT WORKS

The ACR developed by hyundai for electric vehicles it is a robot capable of connecting a cable to the charging socket and remove it when charging is complete. The video below shows the robot in action with a Hyundai IONIQ 6. Once the car is stationary, the ACR instructs the on-board system to open the charging socket, Calculate position and angle precise thanks to an arm-mounted camera. Then he takes the connector from the column and inserts it into the car’s charging socket. When charging is complete, the ACR robot removes the charger, replaces it, and closes the cover of the vehicle’s charging port.

hyundai be aware that for the robot to handle the charger safely and connect it to the charging socket, technology is needed software capable of calculating simultaneously multiple variables:

  • the parking position of the vehicle;
  • the shape of the charging port:
  • weather situation;
  • potential barriers;
  • the weight of the charging cable.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND 3D CAMERAS FOR AUTOMATIC RECHARGE

In this regard, the Group has developed a algorithm that applies artificial intelligence to robots (AI) based on 3D cameras. Hyundai Group R&D engineers built a large-scale outdoor electric vehicle charging station at the R&D center and evaluated its performance under various conditions. After several tests, the ACR has achieved a waterproof and dustproof rating of IP65, and according to Hyundai, its performance has been improved to be used stably even in extreme environments.

HYUNDAI CHARGING ROBOT AT SEOUL MOBILITY SHOW 2023

The ACR will be exhibited at the Hyundai Motor stand during the Seoul Mobility Show 2023, which will be held at KINTEX in Ilsan-gu, from March 31 to April 9. “The ACR will help to make Easier EV charging and practical, above all in dark environments. it will also be better accessibilityespecially for people with walking difficultiesas charging cables become thicker and heavier to enable high-speed charging”he stated Dong Jin HyunHead of Robotics Laboratory, Hyundai Motor Group. “We will continue to develop the ACR for more safety and convenience, so that all EV customers will soon be able to benefit from it at charging stations”.
