The ADAC takes stock of the interventions in 2022: fewer calls but double for broken down electric and hybrid cars. The most common cause is always the same
The car fleet on the road is changing, with more and more mild hybrid, hybrid and electric cars in Germany, but the causes of breakdowns and malfunctions requiring the intervention of the ADAC mechanical assistance do not change. In the latest report of the ADAC 2022 talks, the German Automobile Club says the number of breakdown calls has fallen compared to the previous year, but the number of broken down electrified cars is increasing. Here is most common car problems according to the ADAC.
IN 2022, RESCUE REQUESTS FOR BROKEN DOWN CARS DROP
In 2022 the requests for intervention from ADAC road patrols exceeded 3.4 million. Figures that resulted in an average of 9,352 interventions per day or a broken down car every 9.2 seconds to be rescued. That doesn’t mean that 3,413,488 were towed, but a significant number of vehicles stopped on the road. When the patrols intervene, they already arrive on the scene of the breakdown with all the tools which make the particularity of an ADAC emergency vehicle, in addition of course to the spare parts which it may be necessary to replace on the spot. Only if the defect cannot be repaired on siteSO the car is towed to the nearest workshop. The ADAC says that compared to the previous year, in 2022 there were -2.3% of requests. Among the most intense, December 19, 2022 was a record day with 17,436 rescue missions.
THE MOST FREQUENT CAR PROBLEMS IN 2022 RESOLVED BY THE ADAC
Dead or bad car battery issues are the most common cause of breakdowns for cars in 2022 (43.2%), but down from the previous year (it was 46.2% in 2021). Here are which ones in detail are the most common failures:
- drums discharge starter: 43.2%;
- breakdowns at engine o engine management (injection, ignition or sensors): 23.8%;
- alternatorstarter, electrical system or lighting: 10.4%;
- tires: 8.4%;
- bodysteering, brakes, chassis, transmission: 7.2%.
DOUBLE DEMANDS IN 2022AND FOR FAILURES OF ELECTRIC AND HYBRID CARS
The most striking news reported by the ADAC concerns rather electric car, requiring mechanical assistance. Compared to 25,000 calls in 2021, requests for electric and hybrid vehicles were 52,000 in 2022. The Club attributes this push to growing electric mobility, in fact it reports data from the German motorization (Federal Motor Transport Authority – KBA) according to which almost 1.3 million electric cars and hybrid cars were registered in 2022. For at least 1 out of 2 cars, the main cause of breakdown was the 12V starter battery (50%), while more rarely problems occur with the electric motor, the HV battery or the charging system.
