After Catania, Palermo airport is also closed due to a fire: here is the list of flights canceled and diverted to other airports
Summer 2023 very difficult for Sicilian airports: after the partial closure of Catania airport, even thePalermo airport was closed Tuesday, July 25 due tofire developed overnight in the Punta Raisi area, where the capital’s airport is located. Gesap, the company that manages the plant, announced the closed until 11am, but it will probably go much further. Below is the list of canceled or diverted flights at other airports.
PALERMO AIRPORT CLOSED DUE TO FIRE: THE SITUATION
THE vast fire which developed above Cinisi due to the strong sirocco wind therefore reached the perimeter of thePalermo Airport right to judges Falcone and Borsellino, determining the temporary closure. Fire crews are currently working to extinguish the flames around the airport, hoping to be able to allow opening as soon as possible. The airport was also isolated by land for a few hours due to the simultaneous closure of the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo junctions at Villagrazia di Carini and Cinisi (reopened later), which connect the motorway to the airport, as well as rail links.
The air traffic situation in Sicily is very complicated because many diverted flights from Catania departed and landed in Palermowhose airport was in turn involved in a fire on Monday July 17 and partially closed pending the repair of terminal A damaged by the flames.
