Volkswagen anticipates its future with the ID.2all, the prototype that paves the way for the debut of the new ID.2, the electric one at 25,000 euros
volkswagen anticipates its future presented the new ID.2alla prototype that anticipates the future electric car less than 25 thousand eurosexpected on the market in the coming years under the name, subject to possible future developments, of Volkswagen ID.2. The concept car anticipates the German brand’s new strategy, both in terms of design and technical content, with a view to a decisive acceleration of the electrification program after the abandonment of autonomous driving. The new ID.2 will be a compact car but “as spacious as a Golf” And “as cheap as a polo shirt“. The basis of the project is the modular MEB platform, in its new evolution SEM input designed for entry-level models in the group’s zero-emission range. Let’s see all the details of the project.
VOLKSWAGEN ID.2: AN AGGRESSIVE PRICE TO CONQUER THE MARKET
THE main focus of the Volkswagen ID.2all project and of the future version of the series is represented by new electricity price. To develop in the zero-emission car sector, it is essential to reduce the price of access to the range, making the electric car accessible to all. Even Tesla, the undisputed market leader in zero-emission cars, has started working on the Model 2, so Volkswagen can’t be outdone. With the ID.3 (of which we report an interesting long test) which struggles to go below 40,000 euros, it does indeed require a really popular and accessible model. The new ID.2 will aim to achieve this goal by coming to market with a starting price of less than 25,000 euros. Naturally, the model will be made in more expensive variantsand which will present a richer endowment and, probably, a reinforced technical sector, with a larger battery and a more powerful motor. Access to the range, in any case, will be positioned below 25,000 euros. At least that is Volkswagen’s intentions today.
VOLKSWAGEN ID.2: COMPACT BUT SPACIOUS DIMENSIONS LIKE A GOLF
At the base of the project of the future Volkswagen ID.2 there will be the platform SEM input. The car, which will also be the first front-wheel-drive ID in the Volkswagen lineup, will feature compact size who will place it in B-segment of the market. With a length of approximately 4.05 meterstherefore, the ID.2 will be the de facto zero-emission heir to the Volkswagen Polo. However, the German company does not intend to sacrifice on-board comfort by promising that the future electric car at less than 25,000 euros will be as spacious as a Volkswagen Golf and, therefore, as a sedan of almost 4.3 meters. Volkswagen promiseslong wheelbase and very short overhangsfor the new project.
NO COMPROMISE ON RANGE: AT LEAST 450 KILOMETERS FOR THE FUTURE VOLKSWAGEN ID.2
Another key element of the project is represented by theautonomy. The compact size and low price shouldn’t translate to reduced range, as is the case with many affordable electric cars on the market today. The new ID.2 will be able to count, according to the German firm, on a at least 450 kilometers of autonomy. The prototype can count on a 226 HP electric motor. The maximum speed will be 160km/h with one click 0-100km/h finished in less than 7 seconds. Of course, full support for fast charging technologies will not be missing.
VOLKSWAGEN ID.2: WHEN WILL SALES START?
The project of new ID.2 will cover a key role in Volkswagen’s electrification program which involves the launch of ten new models by 2026. The electric car at less than 25,000 euros will have to generate large sales volumes, taking over from the Volkswagen Golf. So there is no urgency. The German company has no intention of speeding things up. The project must be studied in detail. The goal is to bring the production version of the ID.2 to market within 2 to 3 years. The presentation is scheduled for 2025. Sales could start across Europe in 2026.
A LOOK AT THE DESIGN OF THE NEW ID.2
The Volkswagen ID.2 looks to the future but without forgetting the past and the history of the brand. This detail emerges clearly from the analysis of the design with the presence of the C-pillar silhouette designed for the first Golf, suitably reinterpreted but without neglecting the original project. The car, in its prototype version, which Volkswagen defines as “much more than a show car“, has a body that rests firmly on the wheels and a front end that makes it easily identifiable as a brand car. Inside, however, there will be a focus on infotainment but also on solutions designed to maximize space on board. There cargo capacity will be 490 liters (+140 liters compared to the Volkswagen Polo) with the possibility of extending it up to 1,330 liters.
